What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy is a procedure to restore infected teeth. Root canals are needed when bacteria has spread from the exterior of the tooth (which can be restored by fillings and crowns) and has now affected the inner pulp of your tooth. The inner pulp is comprised of blood vessels and nerves, which is why infected teeth are so painful! During a root canal procedure, Dr. Winborn will extract the pulp and seal the tooth to save your teeth from needing to be removed and prevent further decay.

How can infected teeth affect your health?

When plaque builds up on the exterior of your tooth, it destroys the enamel and dentin and eventually seeps into the inner pulp of your tooth and becomes infected. When this is not treated, bacteria forms in the inner pulp and forms an abscess in your gums. This infection can spread into your blood stream and create many problems for the rest of your body.

It is very important to have a tooth infection treated as soon as possible, otherwise the bacteria will eventually start affecting other parts of your body and the tooth will also have to be fully removed!

Are root canals painful?

You don't need to be worried about your upcoming root canal appointment. Our Fort Smith dentist uses modern techniques and a gentle approach to perform our root canal treatments with minimal discomfort and excellent results! We numb the treatment area fully before beginning the procedure, so you won't feel any pain during it. It's completely natural to be nervous before a dental procedure though, which is why we offer sedation to help you relax, if needed.

Root canals remove the infected pulp that causes tooth pain, so our patients who choose to undergo root canal treatment with Dr. Winborn find that the benefits of a root canal greatly outweigh the anxiety before their treatment!

Benefits of root canal therapy

The sooner you schedule a root canal, the more effective the procedure will be! Root canal therapy can:

Save your natural tooth

Root canals stop the process of infection in your tooth. Left untreated, your tooth would have to be extracted and fully replaced.

Restore dental aesthetics

Tooth decay affects the color of your tooth enamel, giving it a shadowy appearance. Once the root canal is completed, we can add a dental crown to restore the color of your tooth!

Relieve discomfort

Discomfort while chewing and being exposed to hot and cold temperatures might just be the worst part about a tooth infection. After a root canal, our patients notice a major relief in discomfort while eating!

Protect weakened teeth

A cavity or infection can damage the structural integrity of your tooth, weakening it and eventually leading to tooth loss. After completing the root canal therapy, Dr. Winborn will restore and reinforce your tooth with a custom-made dental crown.

Save money in the long run

Root canals are often covered by insurance and are more affordable than other restorative dental treatments such as dentures, tooth extraction, and tooth implants.
